INBDE
Overview
The Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) is a newer dental licensing exam that has replaced the former National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part I and Part II exams. The INBDE is a two-day digital exam that evaluates if candidates possess the necessary level of clinical skills to safely practice entry-level dentistry. Passing the INBDE is required for dental licensure in the U.S.
Exam Content

INBDE Day 1 consists of 360 test items (three sets of 100 standalone items and one set of 60 case questions). INBDE Day 2 includes 140 test items (two sets of 70 case questions). The 500 exam questions will cover the Domain of Dentistry, which is represented through a set of Clinical Content areas and Foundation Knowledge areas required for the safe, independent general practice of dentistry by entry-level practitioners. The Domain of Dentistry serves as the key reference for the INBDE test specifications.
Exam Blueprint

The INBDE (Integrated National Board Dental Examination) blueprint combines basic sciences (Foundation Knowledge Areas like Anatomy, Pathology, Pharmacology) and clinical dentistry (Clinical Content Areas like Diagnosis, Operative Dentistry, Periodontics) within integrated clinical scenarios, focusing on decision-making rather than isolated facts, divided into Diagnosis & Treatment Planning, Oral Health Management, and Practice & Profession, all detailed in the JCNDE’s Domain of Dentistry.
Two Main Domains
Two Main Domains
- Foundation Knowledge Areas (FKs):
- Biomedical sciences (Anatomy, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Behavioral Sciences, etc.).
Clinical Content Areas (CCs): - Applied dentistry tasks (Operative Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Orthodontics, Diagnosis, Ethics, etc.).
Three Clinical Component Sections
- Diagnosis and Treatment Planning: Assessing patients, interpreting data, creating plans, identifying alternatives.
- Oral Health Management: Implementing treatment, managing conditions across different dental specialties.
- Practice and Profession: Ethics, patient management, research, informatics, professionalism.
Key Features
- Integrated Format: Combines basic science and clinical application within case-based questions.
- Focus on Application: Tests a dentist’s ability to make clinical judgments.
- Official Source: The JCNDE’s Domain of Dentistry and Candidate Guide are the definitive guides, available on the JCNDE.org website.
NBDHE
The NBDHE (National Board Dental Hygiene Examination) is a crucial, computer-based test required for dental hygiene licensure, assessing your grasp of biomedical and dental hygiene sciences through 350 multiple-choice questions split into a 200-question discipline-based section and a 150-question case-based section, testing application of knowledge in problem-solving scenarios to help state boards determine competency for public protection.
DLOSCE
The DLOSCE (Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is a computer-based dental exam using interactive 3D models and realistic scenarios to test clinical judgment for U.S. licensure, replacing live patients with virtual ones for standardized, reliable assessment. It features 150 questions across key dental areas (Restorative, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery, etc.), with multiple-choice, multiple-response formats where careful selection is key, as incorrect answers can nullify points. Administered by the JCNDE, it evaluates diagnostic and treatment planning skills needed for safe, entry-level dental practice.
DHLOSCE
The DHLOSCE (Dental Hygiene Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is a new, standardized clinical exam by the JCNDE assessing a dental hygiene candidate’s real-world judgment and skills for safe practice, moving beyond just knowledge recall to problem-solving in patient scenarios, covering assessment, care planning, and treatment, and used by state boards for licensure. It’s a computer-based exam with multiple-choice questions (select one or more correct answers) focusing on clinical scenarios, covering areas like patient assessment, care plans, and evidence-based treatment.
Exam Eligibility
To be eligible for the INBDE (Integrated National Board Dental Examination), you must generally be a student or graduate of a CODA-accredited program or meet specific requirements as a former student or international candidate, needing confirmation from your dental school or submitting degree verification (like an ECE report for foreign graduates), plus a DENTPIN and ADA membership (if applicable) for the ADA/JCNDE process. Eligibility is confirmed by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) after your program or credentials are verified, allowing you to register and take the exam.
